One link, many places: how to share a rental listing by QR code, text and email
Pick one clean web address for the listing and use it everywhere: a QR code on the sign, a text to people who asked, an email to a waitlist, a post in a local group. One address means one page to keep correct, and when the unit rents you take one page down. Put a single line of text next to the link saying what it is and what to do.
Why one link beats copies of the listing
When you paste the listing into five places, there are five versions to update when the rent changes or the unit is taken. People find the old version a month later and call about a home that is gone. A link points to one page you control, so a change appears everywhere at once and a taken-down page stops the calls.
What makes a good link
- Short and readable. A name like /l/maple-2b is easy to say, type and trust. A long string of letters looks like spam.
- Stable. If the address changes when you edit, old signs and posts break.
- Quick on a phone. Most renters open it from a text or a QR code on mobile data.
- Complete. It should show photos, rent, deposit, available date, pet rules and how to ask for a showing or apply, without a sign-in.
Where each use fits
| Place | What to do | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Yard sign or flyer | Print the link and a QR code that opens it. Keep the code large, at least about 1 inch (2.5 cm) square. | Test it from a phone at arm's length, and in the sun. |
| Text reply | Send the link and one line: "Here is the listing with photos and times." | Reply only to people who contacted you. |
| Email to a waitlist | A short note with the link and the available date. See keeping a waitlist. | Use blind copy or individual sends so you do not share addresses. |
| Local group or social post | A photo, three facts and the link. See Facebook and local groups. | Follow the group's rules on posting. |
Making a QR code that works
- Use the final link, not a draft. A QR code cannot be edited after it is printed.
- Generate it with a free QR tool, and test the result with two different phones.
- Leave a blank border around it and keep it high contrast, dark on light.
- Print the short link as text under the code, for people who would rather type it.
Example a made-up owner prints a yard sign with a QR code that opens the listing at /l/maple-2b and the words "2 bed, scan for photos and times." Over two weekends the sign gets scanned by people the owner never meets in a group or a listing site. Because the link is stable, the same sign works when the rent drops.
Take care with what the link shows
Fair housing rules apply to every place you post, not just the main listing. A short caption must follow the same rules as the full listing, so keep it to facts about the home. Under 42 U.S.C. 3604(c), rental notices and ads may not state a preference or limitation based on a protected class (see the statute). Also keep your own phone number and address out of public posts unless you mean to publish them, and see listing scams for what happens when a listing is copied.
How DoorKeeping handles it
Each published DoorKeeping listing lives at doorkeeping.com/l/ followed by a short readable name that is set once and never changes, so one link works for a sign, a text, an email and a post. The page is server-rendered and loads without script, shows photos, facts, description, amenities and pet rules, and has an Apply button and a Schedule a showing form. Taking the listing down removes the page within a minute or two. The Equal Housing Opportunity statement is on every page. See the connect page.

Questions
- Should I use one link for all my rental marketing?
- Yes, where you can. One page is easier to keep correct, and taking it down stops the calls.
- How big should a QR code on a sign be?
- Large enough to scan from a few feet away, and test it with phones before printing. A bigger code with a clear border is safer than a small one.
- Can I share a listing link in a Facebook group?
- Usually, if the group allows rental posts. Follow its rules and keep the caption to facts about the home.
- What happens to the link when the unit rents?
- Take the listing down so the link stops showing it. In DoorKeeping an unpublished listing returns the not found page.
