Does Claude or ChatGPT remember my rentals between chats?
Both can carry some context from one chat to the next, but memory is a summary of what you said, not a record of your properties. It can be stale, incomplete or wrong, and you control what it keeps. For rent, leases and balances, use a source that holds the real numbers, and treat memory as a convenience for your preferences.
What "memory" means in these tools
Anthropic describes Claude's memory as a way to learn your professional context, such as team processes and project details, so you do not have to re-explain them in every chat. It is optional and you turn it on in Settings. You can view and edit the memory summary there, and you can tell Claude what to focus on or ignore. Each project gets its own separate memory, which keeps unrelated work apart.
ChatGPT has its own memory settings, with its own controls to review, delete or turn off what is kept. Look in your account settings for the current options, because they change over time and differ by plan.
In both cases memory is a short summary drawn from conversations. It is not a database of your tenants, leases or balances.
What memory is good for
- Your style: short, friendly messages to tenants, no exclamation points.
- Standing rules: never state what the law requires, always leave notice periods blank.
- Your setup: you own four duplexes and use a local plumber and a handyman.
- Your habits: you want a Monday summary in three bullets.
These save typing and make drafts sound like you. They are low risk if they drift, because you read every draft anyway. The same standing rules can be set up deliberately; see custom instructions for a landlord's AI.
What memory is bad for
Do not rely on memory for anything that has to be exact:
- What a tenant owes. A balance changes with every payment and charge. A remembered number is out of date the day after.
- Lease dates and terms. A summary may drop a clause or merge two leases.
- Who paid what. Memory has no way to match a bank deposit.
- Anything a tenant told you in confidence or that you would not want repeated.
Example a made-up owner once told the assistant that unit 3C pays $1,100. Later the rent rose to $1,150 at renewal. If memory still says $1,100, a draft rent letter may use the old number. The owner must catch it, which is why every amount gets checked against the ledger.
Memory also holds what you typed, so sensitive details can stay in it. If you share tenant information, review the memory summary and remove what should not be there. For a safer routine see is it safe to give an AI app tenant data.
Use a private chat when the details are sensitive
Anthropic says incognito chats do not appear in your history or get saved to memory, and your existing memory is unchanged. ChatGPT has a similar temporary chat option. For a one-off task that includes a tenant's situation, a private chat means nothing from it lands in a long-lived summary. You still redact what you do not need.
Connected records are a different thing
A connection to your property software gives the assistant a live read of the actual records each time you ask. Nothing has to be remembered, because the answer is looked up. That is why a question like "who is late and how much?" can be answered from the books rather than from a summary of an old chat. To test any answer, ask the assistant to open the ledger for the largest balance and show the charges that add up to it; the checklist is in check an AI answer about your rent numbers.
How DoorKeeping handles it
DoorKeeping is the record: when Claude or ChatGPT is connected, it reads your ledgers, leases and messages from DoorKeeping each time instead of trusting what it remembers. You can turn the connection off at any time. Rent stays in your own bank account, and anything involving money or a legal step waits for your approval. Memory settings stay in Claude or ChatGPT, under your control.

Questions
- Does Claude remember my tenants?
- Only if memory is on and you told it about them. It keeps a summary you can view and edit, and incognito chats are not saved to memory.
- Can I trust remembered rent amounts?
- No. Check every amount against your ledger, because balances and rents change.
- How do I stop it from keeping tenant details?
- Turn memory off, use a private or incognito chat for sensitive tasks and delete anything in the memory summary that should not be there.
- Is a connected assistant different?
- Yes. It looks up the current records each time instead of relying on a summary of past chats.
