How to create a rental listing by asking Claude or ChatGPT

Tell your assistant which unit is vacant and ask for a listing. If it is connected to your records, it fills in the rent, bedrooms, bathrooms and lease terms from the unit and the last lease, writes the description in fair housing safe wording and shows you the result. Nothing goes public until you approve it.

The steps, in plain order

  1. Ask which of your units are empty or about to be. A connected assistant can list them with their current status.
  2. Pick one and ask for a listing. Give it anything the records cannot know: a new floor, a fresh coat of paint, a parking space that comes with the unit.
  3. Read the draft. Check the rent, the move-in date, the pet and utility terms and the description.
  4. Add photos. Order and captions matter. See what to shoot.
  5. Approve it. The page goes live only after you say yes.

The reason for the last step is simple. A listing is an advertisement, and an advertisement is something you are legally responsible for, whether you or an assistant wrote it.

What a connected assistant can fill in for you

A chat assistant that is not connected to anything has to guess, and a listing built from guesses is where wrong rent and wrong dates come from. A connected assistant can read the facts you already keep.

The fair housing check is not optional

Section 3604(c) of the Fair Housing Act makes it unlawful to publish a notice or advertisement that states a preference or limitation based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status or national origin (see the statute and HUD's overview). Many states and cities add more protected classes.

An AI draft can slip. Phrases like "perfect for young professionals" or "ideal for a quiet couple" sound harmless, but they describe who should live there. Read the words to avoid and describe the home and its terms instead.

A prompt you can copy

Use plain instructions. For example: "Make a listing for unit 12B using the facts in my records. Describe only the home, the building and the lease terms. Do not describe who would like it. List anything you were unsure about at the end."

The last sentence is useful. Asking the assistant to name its own gaps turns hidden guesses into a short checklist for you.

How DoorKeeping handles it

With DoorKeeping connected, your assistant can list your empty units and their listings, then ask you to publish one. The listing is filled in from the unit and its last lease, with fair housing checked wording. It appears on its page only after you accept it, and you can take it down the same way. Photos can be put in walking order with a short caption each, and that tour is a draft you read before it goes on the listing page.

Questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude post a rental listing for me?
Only if it is connected to software that can publish one. DoorKeeping lets your assistant ask you to publish a listing, and it goes live after you approve it.
Does AI write listings that follow fair housing law?
It can, but it can also slip. Keep the description about the home and the lease terms, and read it before you approve.
What should I give the assistant besides the records?
Recent changes such as new flooring or paint, parking, laundry and anything the records would not show.
Why not let the assistant publish without asking me?
A listing is an advertisement you are responsible for. One tap to approve keeps a wrong rent or a risky phrase from going public.
