Can I paste a lease into ChatGPT? What to remove first

You can paste a lease if you first remove what identifies the tenant and any number that opens an account: names, contact details, SSNs, ID and bank numbers, signatures and screening results. Replace each with a label such as Tenant A. The assistant needs the terms to explain a clause, not the person. Never paste a Social Security number, an ID image or a bank account number.

The rule: keep only what the question needs

The FTC's guide for businesses says to take stock of the personal information you have, keep only what you need and protect it. See Protecting Personal Information. Pasting into a chat is a form of sharing, so ask what the question needs. Explaining a pet clause needs the clause. It does not need the tenant's name.

Do the same for a ledger, a rent roll and a tenant email. Replace names with unit numbers. If an email thread contains a medical or disability detail, summarize it without the detail.

Know where the pasted text goes

Check the settings of the plan you use. Anthropic's consumer privacy page says chats can be used for training if the Model Improvement setting is on, that incognito chats are not used for model improvement, and that raw content from connectors such as MCP servers is excluded unless you copy it into a chat. Read the current terms for your own plan, and for ChatGPT check its data controls. A business plan may have different terms than a personal one.

Notice the last point. Content read through a connector is treated differently from content you paste. That is one reason a connection that reads from your records beats copying out of them.

A safe way to ask

Example a made-up clause check. Instead of pasting the lease, you write: "Clause 9 of a 12 month lease says Tenant A may keep one cat under 15 pounds with a $300 pet deposit. Tenant A now wants a second cat. Draft a short reply that says the lease allows one pet and asks Tenant A to contact me." There are no names, numbers or addresses, and the draft is just as useful.

Put the real name back only after the draft is back, in your own email, not in the chat.

How DoorKeeping handles it

Through the DoorKeeping connector your assistant reads from your records, so most questions need no pasting. The connector reads only your own portfolio, and the data views it uses leave out SSNs, birth dates, bank and card numbers and tenant contact details. Tenant names come back marked as data, so a name or a note cannot give the assistant instructions. Anything involving money or a legal step waits for your one-tap approval, and you can disconnect from Claude or ChatGPT at any time. Rent and payments stay in your own bank accounts. DoorKeeping never holds your money and sends a payment only when you approve it.

Questions

Is it safe to paste a lease into ChatGPT?
Only after removing names, contact details, ID and account numbers and signatures. Keep the terms.
Does Claude train on what I paste?
Anthropic says consumer chats can be used for training when the Model Improvement setting is on, and not in incognito chats. Check the current terms for your plan.
What if I already pasted an SSN?
Delete the chat, check your plan's retention settings, and if the SSN is a tenant's, see the breach guidance for your state.
Can the AI see my documents if I connect it?
Only what the connector exposes. Check what it reads and that you can disconnect it.
